The Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Ghandi Olaoye, has cancelled the Egungun Festival following security concerns arising from attacks allegedly perpetrated by hoodlums during the celebration.
The festival, which started on July 8, was billed to end yesterday.
In a statement, the Palace Secretary, Mr. Toyin Ajamu, said the decision was taken after several incidents that threatened public peace and safety.
According to the statement, the cancellation became necessary to prevent a breakdown of law and order and to avert any unforeseen circumstances that could endanger residents and visitors in Ogbomoso.
The palace directed law enforcement agencies to comply with the directive and maintain peace across the affected communities.
It further warned that any individual or group found continuing with the celebration or engaging in activities capable of disrupting public order would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
The statement emphasised the need for residents to cooperate with security agencies and respect the directive issued by the traditional institution in the interest of public safety.
The festival is one of the prominent traditional cultural celebrations in Ogbomoso, attracting participants and spectators from within and outside the region.
Security agencies have since been urged to intensify surveillance and enforcement to ensure full compliance with the order.
