Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has blamed alleged saboteurs for the damage to a section of the newly commissioned Lameco Flyover in Osogbo, accusing unnamed politicians of sponsoring the vandalisation of public infrastructure for political gain.
The governor made the allegation on Friday after inspecting the affected section of the bridge, where he also directed immediate security surveillance of major public infrastructure across the state.
A statement by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, said Adeleke received a briefing from engineers in the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure before expressing concern over the incident and a similar reported case at the Lagere Flyover.
The governor said he received a briefing from the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Works, Engr Bashiru Bello, on the circumstances surrounding the incident and described the damage as an act of vandalism.
He said engineers from the state Ministry of Works had been mobilised to the site to commence immediate repairs.
“It is unfortunate that some saboteurs, whose sole objective is to undermine our developmental strides and destroy the legacy of this administration, would resort to attacking public infrastructure built with taxpayers’ resources.
“This is no longer politics.
“Election is about the people voting for the leaders of their choice. Our job as politicians is to market our plans and records. Why would any genuine politician arrange to destroy a beautiful edifice like the Lameco Bridge because of an election? That conduct is a hate crime against the people of Osun State.
“It is so immoral that Osun APC is not even ashamed of its masterminding such sabotage. I call on politicians to play the politics of development. These infrastructures were built with public funds. Why should we endanger the lives of our people and waste public resources simply because of elections?” Adeleke said.
The Lameco Flyover, which was constructed at a cost of N8,521,632,257.28, was commissioned by the governor on July 1, 2026.
A section of the flyover was damaged in the early hours of Friday after rainfall in Osogbo, with images showing visible cracks and a sunken asphalt surface on one lane of the bridge.
Adeleke urged security agencies to identify, arrest, and prosecute those responsible for what he described as a criminal act.
“I enjoin security agencies to strengthen the protection of public infrastructure across the state and ensure that those responsible for this criminal act are identified, arrested, and brought to justice,” he stated.
The governor also called on residents to protect government projects, stressing that public infrastructure belongs to the people.
“These projects belong to the people of Osun State, and every well-meaning citizen has a responsibility to protect them from acts of sabotage and vandalism.”
Adeleke reaffirmed that his administration would remain committed to infrastructure development despite the incident.
“My administration remains resolute in its commitment to delivering quality infrastructure and will not be deterred by the actions of those who seek to impede our progress.”
