Team Nigeria’s sensational lifter, Rafiatu Folashade Lawal, successfully defended her Commonwealth Games title with another commanding performance, shattering the Games record to win gold in the women’s 58kg weightlifting event at Glasgow 2026.
Lawal delivered a superb display, lifting a combined total of 229kg to claim the gold medal and set a new Commonwealth Games record, finishing well clear of the rest of the field.
Canada’s Ann-Sophie Taschereau settled for silver with a total lift of 215kg, while India’s Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam took bronze after recording 199kg.
The triumph marked Team Nigeria’s third gold medal in weightlifting at the Games.
Earlier on Monday, Edidiong Joseph Umoafia clinched gold in the men’s 71kg event, while Onome Didih topped the podium in the women’s 53kg category with a record-breaking performance of her own.
Team Nigeria has now amassed 10 medals at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games—six gold and four silver—to continue an impressive campaign in Scotland.
Meanwhile, Onome Didih delivered a sensational performance to claim gold in the women’s 53kg weightlifting event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The Nigerian lifter dominated the competition from start to finish, setting three new Commonwealth Games records on her way to the title.
Didih opened with a record-breaking lift of 93 kg in the snatch before raising the bar again with a 113 kg clean and jerk, another Games record. Her combined 206kg total also established a new Commonwealth Games record.
India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav settled for the silver medal with a total lift of 199kg, while Canada’s Rebeka Groulx claimed bronze after finishing with 178kg.
The triumph marked Team Nigeria’s second gold medal in weightlifting at the Glasgow 2026 Games, following Edidiong Joseph Umoafia’s victory in the men’s 71kg event earlier on Monday.
