Winning an election in Nigeria is not always about how popular a candidate is. According to Hon. Ayodeji Joseph, the strength of the political structure behind a candidate can be just as important.

Hon. Joseph shares his perspective in Seun Oloketuyi’s forthcoming book, How to Win an Election in Nigeria, where he offers insight into some of the less visible factors that can determine the outcome of an election.

According to Hon. Joseph, a candidate needs more than personal appeal to compete effectively. There has to be a strong structure capable of connecting the candidate to voters and keeping the campaign organised.

Beliefs

He believes the relationship between a candidate and the party machinery is particularly important, with each playing a different role in an election. While a candidate’s personality, reputation and relationship with the grassroots matter, Hon. Joseph argues that a strong political structure can significantly strengthen those qualities. “A weak candidate vying on the platform of a strong party can win, but the mandate could be said to be fragile,” he said.

For Hon. Joseph, the real advantage comes when the candidate and the structure supporting the candidate are both strong. “Having a strong candidate ride on the back of an equally strong political structure makes the victory a landslide,” he said.

Reflections

His reflections offer a glimpse into the political calculations that take place long before voters finally get to cast their ballots.

For Hon. Joseph, the strength of the structure behind a candidate can determine whether personal popularity is enough to translate into victory.

His observations on the often-overlooked machinery behind electoral success are featured in Seun Oloketuyi’s How to Win an Election in Nigeria, scheduled for release on September 6.
