The African football governing body, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has congratulated Nigeria’s Falconets following their impressive round of 16 win against England on Thursday at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
After finishing second in Group F, the Falconets thrashed England 3-0 thanks to goals from Tosin Rafiu, Janet Akekoromowei, and Mary Mamudu.
It was the Falconets’ second win in four meetings with England at the U-20 women’s World Cup.
Commenting on the superb win, CAF wrote on their X handle: “QUARTER-FINALS BOUND! 🇳🇬😍.
“Nigeria delivered against England to book their place in the last eight! 👏👏”
Meanwhile, the Falconets will take on Colombia in the quarterfinal, after the South Americans edged out hosts Poland in the quarterfinals also on Thursday.
The only time the Falconets and Colombia clashed at the U-20 women’s World Cup was in the semifinal of the 2010 edition.
After 90 minutes of football, Ebere Orii’s second-minute strike secured a 1-0 win for the Falconets.
Meanwhile, Falconets captain Christianah Uzoma has credited the team’s determination for their impressive 3-0 victory over England in the Round of 16 at the ongoing 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
Moses Aduku’s side delivered a dominant performance on Thursday to secure their place in the quarter-finals, with goals from Tosin Rafiu, Janet Akekoromowei, and Mary Mary Mamudu.
Uzoma, who produced a series of crucial saves during the encounter, including tipping Rachel Maltby’s penalty onto the crossbar, said the team was determined to avoid elimination.
“Our performance was good, and we told ourselves that we were not going to lose this game. We don’t want to go home. We came with determination,” Uzoma told FIFA.
The shot stopper also revealed that the team’s ambition extends beyond the quarter-finals, with their sights firmly set on lifting the trophy.
“We hope to get to the final. Our hope is to win the World Cup,” she added.
Nigeria will face Colombia in the quarter-finals in Łódź on Sunday, with a place in the semi-finals at stake.
