The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement issued on Wednesday.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad, urging citizens to use the anniversary to reflect on the values of unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence, and mutual respect.
The minister said peace and stability remained essential to national development and called on Nigerians to emulate the country’s founding fathers by demonstrating commitment to the nation.
“As we celebrate 66 years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength, and our collective determination remains the foundation upon which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built.”
Tunji-Ojo said the Federal Government remained committed to building a better Nigeria under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He also assured citizens that the administration would continue to strengthen national security, improve public safety, and create an environment where Nigerians could live, work, and pursue their legitimate aspirations with confidence.
The minister urged Nigerians to celebrate peacefully and contribute to building a country that future generations would be proud of.
