A mother and her child have been killed after two heavily laden 20-foot container trucks overturned at Mile 2, near Freeman Market, inward Apapa, Lagos State, prompting a call for a thorough investigation into the cause of the fatal accident.
The Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.
Taofiq said the victims were trapped beneath the overturned trucks and their containerised cargoes, sustaining fatal injuries.
He stated that LASTMA rescue and recovery personnel responded to the scene to evacuate the victims, remove the wreckage and manage traffic.
According to him, the affected road was temporarily cordoned off, while motorists were diverted through an adjoining service lane to prevent traffic gridlock and secondary accidents.
The agency deployed a crane and a high-capacity tow vehicle to remove the overturned trucks and their containers, while police officers provided security during the recovery operation.
The remains of the victims were subsequently conveyed to the Police Mortuary in Yaba for necessary procedures.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and called for a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Taofiq quoted Bakare-Oki as urging relevant security agencies to determine whether mechanical defects, excessive loading, improper cargo distribution, driver negligence or other factors contributed to the incident.
The LASTMA boss also stressed the need for truck operators to comply with road safety regulations, conduct regular vehicle inspections and ensure that their cargoes were properly secured.
He said, “The preservation of human life remains paramount,” while urging motorists, particularly operators of heavy-duty articulated vehicles, to ensure their vehicles were roadworthy and adhere to prescribed safety standards.
Bakare-Oki added that responsible driving and proper vehicle maintenance were essential to preventing avoidable deaths on Lagos roads.
