Super Eagles winger, Samuel Chukwueze is expected to spend at least three months on the sidelines following successful surgery to repair a ruptured tendon in his left hip.

AC Milan confirmed on Wednesday that Chukwueze had undergone successful surgery in London to repair a ruptured tendon in his left hip, ruling him out of Nigeria’s double-header against Tanzania. Nigerianews subscription

Statement

The Serie A club said in an official statement on Wednesday that the operation, on the tensor fasciae latae muscle, was performed by Professor Ernest Schilders in the presence of Dr Stefano Mazzoni.

“The surgery… was a complete success,” Milan said. “The footballer will return to Italy today (Wednesday), where he will begin his rehabilitation process.”

Return

No return date has been given but Italian media reports, including Sky Sport Italia, claimed Chukwueze could be sidelined for about three months, which means he will miss the Taifa Stars encounters on November 13 and 17 as Nigeria continues its push towards the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The setback is a blow to Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, who must now look elsewhere for attacking options. Chukwueze’s pace, dribbling and experience would have been valuable in both matches.

Injury

The injury is also a major disappointment for Milan. Chukwueze, who joined from Fulham after a loan spell there, was not expected to feature heavily this season, but Rúben Amorim made him the starting right wing-back for much of the early campaign. He has not played since the injury, which was reportedly sustained in the Serie A game against Atalanta on October 18. Conservative treatment was initially considered before surgery became necessary.

With rehabilitation now his priority, the former Villarreal man faces a lengthy road back to competitive football.
