Nigeria’s U17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, made history on Wednesday after defeating South American powerhouse Brazil 3-1 to reach the final of the 2026 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

The achievement marks Nigeria’s best-ever finish in the competition, surpassing their previous record of a third-place finish in 2022 when they claimed the bronze medal.

Hakeem Busari’s side secured a place in their maiden U17 Women’s World Cup final, where they will face Japan, thanks to second-half goals from Queen Joseph and Awawu Bashiru.

Brazi”s Greise Kelly pulled one back in the 89th minute, but her effort proved to be nothing more than a consolation as the Flamingos held on for a memorable 3-1 victory.

Nigeria will now turn their attention to Japan as they look to cap their historic campaign by lifting the trophy for the first time.

Speaking after the win over Brazil, manager Busari admitted that he wants his players to complete their historic journey by beating Japan in the final and winning the trophy.

“It’s just for us to tell the girls it’s another game. We are playing Japan; it is another different ball game, different character,” Busari said.

It is just for us to concentrate; let’s put the icing on the cake, let’s be focused, and let’s finish the job because the job is not yet done.

Busari made it clear that the Flamingos’ ultimate ambition is to return home with the trophy.

“We are still in process because the semifinal we know we are on the medal table, but the trophy is the major thing our country wants. We want it as well; we just need to fight.”

Nigeria will face Japan at the Mohammed VI Football Academy (Pitch 3) in Salé on Saturday, November 7, with the Flamingos chasing a historic triumph that would make them the first nation outside Europe and Asia to win the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.

Meanwhile, Awawu Bashiru has expressed her excitement and pride after playing a pivotal role in the Flamingos’ 3-1 victory over Brazil in the semi-final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

The talented winger scored twice to inspire Nigeria to victory over the South Americans at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, Pitch 3, in Rabat on Wednesday night.

The encounter marked Bashiru’s first start of the tournament, having featured for just 73 minutes before the semi-final clash. Her outstanding display earned her the Player of the Match award.

The youngster praised her teammates, the coaching staff, and the collective effort that secured Nigeria’s place in the final.

“Today was my first start, so I’m so happy, I’m so excited,” Bashiru told FIFA.

“I’m so proud of myself, my teammates, my coach, and the teamwork. We did it, and it was not an easy task. I thank God. I’m grateful.”
