Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have uncovered consignments of suspected illicit drugs concealed in imported sofas and decorative headgears worn by women.
In a statement shared via X on Sunday, the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, described the find as one of the recent discoveries by NDLEA operatives, sharing video footage of the operations.
One of the videos showed NDLEA officers dismantling large cardboard packages containing imported sofas. After removing the outer wrapping, foam, and internal padding, the operatives found several sealed packages of suspected narcotics hidden inside the furniture.
In another operation, officers searched decorative women’s headgears, cutting through their fabric and linings to expose additional packages of suspected illicit substances concealed within the traditional coverings.
Babafemi described the seizures as some of the agency’s recent discoveries, although the statement did not provide details of the quantities recovered, the locations of the operations, or any arrests made.
One of the videos displays rows of vacuum-sealed bags containing dried plant material laid out on a table after recovery.
“One of the recent discoveries by @ndlea_nigeria is the concealment of a large consignment of illicit drugs in imported furniture (sofas) and women’s headgear. Just take a look at the moment of discovery captured in the attached videos,” Babafemi wrote.
This latest seizure forms part of NDLEA’s sustained campaign against increasingly sophisticated drug trafficking networks that exploit everyday consumer goods and personal items to smuggle narcotics into and out of Nigeria.
Over the years, the agency has repeatedly uncovered similar concealment methods involving furniture components, headgears, shoes, electrical appliances, and other ordinary imports and exports at seaports, airports, and courier facilities.
The methods underscore the persistent creativity of cartels seeking to evade detection.
