The Engineer Seyi Makinde-led government in Oyo State has disowned a post on entertainment tax which went viral on Wednesday on the social media, advising members of the public to discountenance it.
The post had suggested that the Oyo State government will tax the people and residents of the state for social activities, including burial, naming ceremonies and weddings.
However, the state government stated in a release on Thursday that the post on entertainment tax is fake, adding that it was released for the sole purpose of maligning the Governor ‘Seyi Makinde-led administration
The government stated in the release by the state Commissioner for Information Prince Dotun Oyelade, that any official post of that nature will have the Revenue Code for payment of any tax or levy.
It further clarified that such a table of tax must statutorily have the signature of the Chairman of the Oyo State Internal Revenue Board.
“None of these conditions have been fulfilled in the viral post.
“Equally important is the address which must read the Oyo State Internal Revenue Office which was clearly absent in the mischievous post,” Oyelade stated in the release.
He added that, as the next elections draw nearer, various tactics will be adopted by politicians to misinform them and mar the enviable achievements that Governor Makinde and his team have embarked upon in a little over six years.
Oyelade also cautioned bloggers and other news outlets against spreading unverified information, urging them to always verify their stories before putting them in the public domain.
