The Nigerian government has reiterated the need to build a stronger and more united country, urging citizens to uphold democratic values and work collectively for national development.
The call was made by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, during the inter-church service held at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
Reflecting on the country’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, the SGF said democracy should never be taken for granted, stressing that “leadership must continue to emerge through ballots rather than violence.”
He acknowledged the challenges facing Nigerians but assured citizens of the government’s commitment to security, territorial integrity, and the protection of lives and property.
Ahead of the 2027 general election, Senator Akume emphasised that elections should not be treated as warfare, urging political actors to conduct their activities peacefully and responsibly.
He also cautioned Nigerians against the spread of fake news and encouraged youths to embrace innovation, entrepreneurship, and nation-building efforts.
The SGF further called on religious leaders to continue promoting national unity, interfaith harmony, and peaceful coexistence among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and religious groups.
Akume noted that while the nation faces numerous challenges, there is genuine resolve to overcome them and honour the sacrifices of Nigeria’s heroes.
Also speaking, President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, expressed gratitude for Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democracy.
He described the anniversary as a significant milestone and commended the church for its contributions to sustaining democratic governance.
While acknowledging the country’s security and economic challenges, Senator Akpabio expressed optimism that Nigeria would overcome its difficulties and achieve a brighter future.
He urged Christians to intensify prayers for the nation, calling on citizens to unite against crime and all forms of wrongdoing.
The Senate President also highlighted the importance of youth participation in democratic governance and commended the Armed Forces for their sacrifices in safeguarding the nation.
He expressed confidence that the 2027 general elections would occur peacefully and credibly, thereby strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
