The Commissioner of Police in charge of the Ekiti State gubernatorial poll, Abayomi Shogunle, has warned troublemakers and political thugs to stay away from Saturday’s governorship election.
Shogunle issued the stern warning during a press briefing in Ado-Ekiti, saying anyone who attempts to disrupt the exercise would face the full weight of the law.
He said the police had put in place robust security measures across the state and would not tolerate any act that could undermine the peaceful conduct of the poll.
He said the force had concluded all necessary security preparations and was fully ready to ensure a hitch-free election.
“I am appealing to troublemakers to steer clear of the Ekiti governorship election. We will not allow any individual or group to foment trouble during the poll.
“If you attempt to do anything funny, we will deal with you decisively and ensure that you face the full wrath of the law. Anybody who tries to disrupt the peaceful conduct of the election will be severely dealt with,” he warned.
He disclosed that the Inspector-General of Police had approved a comprehensive operational order anchored on a multi-layered policing strategy aimed at preventing and responding to security threats before, during and after the election.
He added that the police, working with other security agencies, had carried out extensive clearance operations in forests and bushes across the state, while strategic locations had been placed under surveillance.
According to him, personnel of the Counter-Terrorism Unit and the Special Intervention Squad have been deployed to strengthen security architecture and respond swiftly to any threat.
“We have set up camps in strategic locations and deployed personnel in major towns and cities. These measures are meant to reassure residents and provide a secure environment for the election,” he said.
He encouraged eligible voters to come out en masse and exercise their democratic rights without fear, assuring them of adequate security across the state.
