President Bola Tinubu has celebrated legendary musician, Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, popularly known as King Sunny Ade, on his 80th birthday, saying his extraordinary career transformed juju music into a globally recognised Nigerian cultural treasure.
The President described the music icon as one of Africa’s most celebrated entertainers whose talent and innovation had projected Nigeria’s cultural heritage across the world and inspired generations of musicians.
In a personally signed tribute on Tuesday, Tinubu said King Sunny Ade had exemplified musical excellence and cultural ambassadorship throughout his career.
“For eight decades, you have exemplified musical excellence and cultural ambassadorship, enriching our nation and bringing joy to millions across generations.
“Through your extraordinary talent, creativity, discipline and enduring passion, you transformed juju music into a globally recognised Nigerian cultural treasure”, Tinubu said.
The President said the musician’s distinctive sound, blending guitar, talking drums and other traditional instruments, alongside his mesmerising dance steps and innovative approach, had earned him a distinguished place in African music history.
He said King Sunny Ade had also demonstrated that Nigeria’s cultural heritage could transcend borders and connect powerfully with audiences around the world.
“Your remarkable contributions to the Nigerian creative industry have inspired generations of musicians and practitioners. Your music has not only entertained, but it has also preserved our cultural identity, celebrated our traditions and projected the beauty and diversity of our country to the world”, the President said.
Tinubu said the octogenarian’s career represented excellence, perseverance and service to the arts, adding that his achievements had become an enduring national legacy.
“At 80, you embody excellence, perseverance and service to the arts. Your achievements remind us that talent, when combined with dedication and commitment to one’s heritage, can become an enduring national legacy”, he said.
The President, on behalf of his family, the government, and the people of Nigeria, congratulated King Sunny Ade and prayed for good health, wisdom, and many more fulfilling years for the music legend.
