The hope of Super Eagles’ manager, Gernot Rohr of luring Vincent Enyeama back in the fold of the team for the Africa Nations Cup qualifiers, in now in jeopardy as the Ligue 1 club-side, Lille’s first choice goalkeeper has been ruled out for the rest of the season as a result of a knee injury.
The Super Eagles will face South Africa in a 2019 AFCON qualifier in June.
Enyeama, who is on the verge of a return to the Nigeria national team, will be a big miss for the French club as the season draws to a close.
“Vincent Enyeama will be out for the rest of the season. #CourageVincent,” Lille tweeted on Thursday.
Several Lille fans reacted to the unfortunate announcement by expressing their sympathy for the Nigerian star and wishing him a quick recovery.
There has been talk of a recall to the Super Eagles for Enyeama following an injury to his successor Carl Ikeme. But this injury means Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr must consider other options for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa in June.
Ex-Enyimba star Enyeama, who had 101 caps for Nigeria before retiring in 2015, has played 34 times for Lille this season in all competitions.
Enyeama missed last Saturday’s 3-0 Ligue 1 win over Guingamp after having kept goal in all but one of Lille’s league matches this season.
