Former Nigeria queen of the tracks, Mary Onyali-Omagbemi has signified her interest to run for the office of the Vice President of the Athletic Federation of Nigeria at the forthcoming Sports Federation elections slated for next month.
Speaking at on Thursday on Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) sports programme, Sports Parliament, the former Olympian said what the Sports Minister did by throwing open the door for a level-playing ground will enable those that have genuine interest to develop the sports to emerge and not someone who will be there because of Federal or State government nomination.
“Thank God the Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung and the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) have come together and opened the door for a level-playing ground which is democratic and straight to the point,” Onyali told the Parliament.
“If you are passionate, if you think you can do better than the man or woman before you, and you want to take up the position, show us your manifesto so that we can hold you accountable. It’s no longer a Federal or State government nomination.
“I’ve been yearning for this for years. Our fellow ex-internationals and administrators have been calling on us to get in there. When I get in there and I don’t perform then they can hold me accountable, but at least give us a chance,” Onyali stressed.
