Leadership in Nigeria is being given a different meaning these days in the country courtesy of Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.
Without sounding unnecessarily patronizing, the Friday visit to Garki Model Market in Abuja by the Professor of Law was quite surprising and enchanting to many Nigerians.
The country has not witnessed anything of this nature in a very long while and if some other leader had ventured into it, it was definitely not at the presidential level and if it was, this particular visit carried with it a very serious note of genuine concern and sincerity.
Osinbajo’s visit is a sign that God is earnestly listening to Nigerians’ prayers for leaders who will lead by example, for leaders who will come down to their level and relate with them, for leaders who will be attentive enough to be able to identify where the shoe pinches without any kind of ‘protocolarian’ connotation.
The visit also afforded the Presidency the opportunity to know how much shops are being rented out to poor market women and men – most of them rented the shops and spaces from fifth hand profiteers.
Muslims in the country are, perhaps, the luckiest because the Acting President’s visit came on the eve of the commencement of the annual Ramadan fast. Some of them who spoke with the Professor lamented about how difficult it is to buy foodstuff.
It is our belief from this end that Osinbajo will match his words with action by putting necessary machineries in motion to ensure that agricultural practices are heavily supported by the Muhammadu Buhari-led government. This is the only way food prices can come down.
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
