The environmental team of Ibadan South/West Local Government has decried the flirty condition of the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium (Liberty Stadium) in Ibadan.

The council has thus threatened to take legal action against the management of the first stadium in sub Sahara Africa, if it failed to meet a 7-day ultimatum stipulated in the paper served the management.

The caretaker chairman of the metropolitan council area, Hon Gbenga Opaleye who claimed to have led the team of sanitary officers to the stadium during their last weekly routine environmental exercise while addressing newsmen said the environment of the stadium has become an eyesore and could pose danger to the users of the edifice.

“Reports of hoodlums escaping into the stadium after dispossessing people of their belongings from residents and banks operating in its neighborhood prompted us to visit the place during the sanitation exercise, but the level of untidiness of the stadium is too alarming.

“Former aesthetic look of Liberty Stadium has now become a thing of the past with weeds and loads of refuse taking over the better part of the sports arena, and larger part of the edifice is now a huge beer drinking community while some of the bare sections were given out to farmers to cultivate cassava instead for sporting activities”, the council boss noted.

When the zonal coordinator of the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports, South/West zone one that headed the stadium was contacted, Mr. Femi Ajao denied receiving any letter from the officials of the local government, saying his men have a way of keeping the environment of the stadium clean.

“The local government chairman is just being sarcastic after we stopped him from building a car wash illegally on the land of the stadium located outside the perimeter fence of the Ring-Road axis of the stadium”, the zonal coordinator explained.
