Rangers International of Enugu picked up their first win of the Nigeria Professional Football League season on Sunday after a hard fought 1-0 victory away to Oriental rivals, Heartland in Owerri.
The Gbenga Ogunbote tutored side, who lost their week 2 home game against Lobi Stars was the better side in the Oriental derby as the emerged victorious against the Flying Antelope on the road since 2016.
Bright Silas struck the game’s only goal in the 10th minute and Heartland fluffed the chance to level from spot in the first half.
The former Shooting Stars Sports Club coach took the reins in Enugu after successfully guiding the Enyimba back to a continent club competition, but did not hit the ground running at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.
Back to back defeats to Akwa united (away) and Lobi Stars (home) in the opening games of the season cast a dark cloud over his future in Enugu but club chief Christian Chukwu was quick to back the new Coach.
No doubt, Sunday’s victory would bring a huge sigh of relief for 2016 NPFL champions after a busy transfer window and pre-season camping.
However, the win only moves them plays above the relegation zone after three matches.
