The much expected ‘Democracy Day’ is here and, as usual, an official holiday has been declared by the Federal Government for Nigerians to bask and mark the day.
In addition, FG, through the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has been talking about its achievements scoring itself very high.
It said it has fulfilled its campaign promises adding that it has, in a long reflection on the government’s infrastructure battle, security, economy and the anti-corruption war concluded that it has done its best.
Mohammed also said the administration kept its social contract with Nigerians and put the country on the path of sustainable growth.
While Nigerians may not necessarily wish to agree with the Minister’s submissions, the onus rests on the FG to take bolder steps to make the people of the country happier.
The issue of security, especially in the North East is very worrisome and needs to be urgently taken care of.
Added to this is the inability of several states in the country to pay workers as at when due. This has further entrenched poverty in the land. And where there is poverty, other vices will also wish to co-exist there.
Nigerian children, who are believed to the future of the country need to be re-orientated to make them believe in themselves as true future leaders.
As the season of electioneering campaign fast approaches, governments at all levels need to keep the focus. Governance must not be hampered all because elections are coming. The welfare of the people must never be taken for granted. It shall be well.
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
