The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) football team has emerged champions of the 2019 edition of the SWANLUX Soccer Competition after conquering the SWANLUX FC in the final cracker played at former Liberty Stadium, now Obafemi Awolowo Stadium on Christmas Eve.
The popular grassroots soccer competition in Oyo State tagged SWANLUX Cup, which has produced the likes of Kayode Olanrewaju who now plays as a forward for Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk according to Coach Omoniyi Oladepo Alari who is coordinating the soccer tourney has consistently entered its 10th edition.
NURTW football club that had emerged runners-up twice won the trophy after playing draw with the SWANLUX FC owned by the sponsor of the tournament during 90 minutes regulations times and the Union boys scored their five penalty shootouts to lift the Cup for the first time when their opponents scored four.
The financier of the tournament, Folarin Familusi who graced the final match in company of his wife while presenting the trophy reiterated his continued commitment and support for grassroots football in the Oyo State especially the SWANLUX Soccer Competition that has been consistently on for the past decade.
“Nigerian football can only develop if we don’t neglect the grassroots and that is why we believe and care about the grassroots. My aim is also to secure National League status for SWANLUX FC so that the players raised by the coach can get good platform to showcase their stuff”, Familusi noted.
Meanwhile the handler of NURTW FC, Coach Moruf Ogunmola popularly known as Miller has dedicated the trophy to the acting Chairman of NURTW in Oyo State Abideen Olajide popularly known as Ejiogbe and Elder Ade Ajayi of Challenge unit of Lagos- Ibadan interstate, who is sponsoring the team.
