Atletico Madrid Ladies on Sunday fell to a 2-0 defeat to Barcelona as goals from Super Falcons striker Asisat Oshoala and Toni Duggan re-opened the title race at the packed Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, which set a new world record attendance for a women’s match between two club sides.

The result means second-place Barca close the gap on leaders Atletico to just three points with six matches remaining.

It was Oshoala‘s fifth goal in as much games in the Liga Iberdrola since her switch on loan from Chinese club Dalian Quanjian in January.

The 24-year-old grabbed the curtain raiser in the 65th minute of the explosive encounter before substitute Duggan, who came on for the Nigerian in the 73rd minute, sealed the win after just seven minutes on the pitch.

Atletico set a new world record attendance for a women’s match between two club sides as 60,739 fans were at Sunday’s league game against title rivals Barcelona.

Atletico usually play their home games at the club’s training ground but the demand for tickets forced them to move the fixture to the 68,000-capacity Wanda Metropolitano on the outskirts of Madrid.

The record attendance in Madrid continues an increasing rise in the popularity of the women’s game in Spain.

Athletic Bilbao had only set a new record attendance for a women’s game in the country last month when 48,121 supporters attended their Copa de la Reina game against Atletico at San Mames.
