The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Joshua Olagunju Ojo has enjoined the Oyo State House of Assembly members-elect to be cautious on the issue of who and who they put forward to occupy leadership positions when they resume in June.
He made disclosure while declaring open a three-day Orientation Programme organized by the Oyo State House of Assembly for the 9th Assembly members-elect.
The orientation programme was held at Nest SPA Suites and Hotel, Agodi GRA, Ibadan on May 13th, 2019.
Hon. Olagunju stated that the orientation programme for the members-elect is imperative for capacity building, adding that it is to take members-elect through sessions on legislative practice, procedures, mock sessions and other papers that will boost their capacity as legislators.
According to the Speaker, “this training is very crucial and strategic towards making inauguration of the 9th assembly very impactful. I enjoin you to make the best of this opportunity by surpassing the expectations of your various constituencies.
“The very first task to be performed during the first meeting of the House is the elections of the presiding officers, Speaker and Deputy Speaker. May I state here that as much as the election is usually the arrangement of the ruling party, honourable members need to be cautious on who they put forward to occupy the seats of Speaker and Deputy Speaker to avoid bickering and ineptitude.”
The Speaker while charging them to pay attention to the training as professionals in the various fields have been invited to put them through topics that will enhance their capacity to be effective and efficient in the law making process, he also enjoined the members-elect to always focus on interests that will always promote peace throughout their tenure.
In his welcome address, the Clerk of the House, Mrs. Felicia Oyediran explained that the orientation programme was designed to equip members-elect and make them understand the tasks ahead of them.
She noted that the programme is the first of its kind in the history of the state, urging them to pay attention as the programme was packaged in an interactive form to ensure equal participation.
One of the members-elect and representative of Ibadan South West constituency 1, Yusuf Adebisi, pledged to use the opportunity and mandate given to him by the people of his constituency to encourage other youths to improve the level of their participation in politics.
Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, representing Ibarapa East constituency and who is one of the two returnees, opined that the programme will assist the members-elect to hit the ground running immediately after inauguration in terms of law making, oversight functions and others.
He commended the organizers for preparing the 9th members-elect towards facing the challenges ahead.
