Mr. Foluso Daramola, the Ekiti State Commissioner for Education Science and Technology has commended the Committee set up to review the Education Laws of the state for working in line with the terms of reference given to them by the Ministry.
Mr. Daramola gave the commendation while receiving the reviewed Education Draft Laws of Ekiti State from the committee, in his office in Ado-Ekiti.
He said that the draft review of the Education Law should be forwarded to the Ministry of Justice for proper scrutiny, adding that the copy will be presented to the members of Ekiti State Executive Council for further action.
The Commissioner disclosed that the document will be forwarded to the House of Assembly for legislation and thereafter to the Executive Governor of Ekiti State for his assent before it becomes a law that will drive the Education sector in the State.
Earlier in her speech, the Chairman of the Ekiti State Education Law Review Committee, Mrs. Desola Oke lamented that in the 20 years of uninterrupted democratic rule in Nigeria, some of Educational parastatals are still using the edict that was proclaimed by the Military over 3 decades ago.
She noted that it was an indication that most of the laws guiding the Education sector are obsolete and need urgent review to meet the present day challenges in teaching and learning processes.
The Chairman further stated that the Education Laws inherited from Ondo State have become irrelevant to our needs in certain aspects of Education in Ekiti State, adding that there is need to update them.
She also stressed that in the pursuit of this onerous assignment, the committee received memoranda from Ministries, Departments, Agencies and other relevant stakeholders to make the reviewed law all encompassing.
Mrs. Oke expatiated that these memoranda were carefully studied and analyzed in order to achieve that desired purpose for which they were turned in and in line with the terms of reference of the committee.
The Chairman expressed her confidence that the reviewed law will address a lot of lapses noticed in the former edition as it has been painstakingly worked on to enhance a dynamic growth in Ekiti State Education sector and also meet the current global best practices.
Present at the occasion were the Technical Adviser on Education, Dr. (Mrs.) Bimpe Aderiye, Chairman Teaching Service Commission, Chief Babatunde Abegunde, Permanent Secretary, Teaching Service Commission, Mr. Ayodeji Ajimati, and other top government functionaries from relevant agencies and parastatals.
