Nigeria’s Super Eagles goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi has opened up on his move from Chippa United earlier this year and insisted he is not in competition with Itumeleng Khune.

The former Kaizer Chiefs safe-hand joined Chiefs in a hastily move during the mid-season transfer window in January, essentially as a replacement for Khune following the latter’s injury picked up in December.

The Nigerian international has finally faced South African media for the first time since his arrival at Naturena seven months ago, and outlined his expectations with Amakhosi.

“It was kind of mixed feelings joining Chiefs but still I’m standing strong and facing the challenges, and I think it’s coming out better for me – slowly I’m getting to the best of it,” said Akpeyi.

“You have to upgrade, and not taking anything away from Chippa, but sometimes you have feelings of wanting game-time and having it the way you want, but you also need to understand where you find yourself.

“I’m not taking anything away from Khune, he has been a hero in the team here, so I’m not here to compete with him. I’m only hoping that however much game-time I’ll get, I wish not to get cold forever on the bench.

“Before I came here, I knew of the challenge of having Khune come back from injury but I think the coach has his plan to have brought me into the team and I’m sure he knows how to work that out.”
