Dr Kayode Fayemi’s government in Ekiti State through its Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Gbenga Agbeyo has warned residents against erecting structures on water ways to forestall flood disasters.
Hon. Agbeyo gave the warning while inspecting some of the places ravaged by flood as a result of the recent heavy down pour.
The Commissioner who observed that some houses built on water ways actually blocked the free flow of water which has resulted in the flood.
Speaking on the efforts of government at combating flood in the state, he disclosed that government had identified 235 flood prone areas across the state with a plan to put necessary measure in place in those areas.
According to him, Ekiti State Government had approached the World Bank to source for money so as to put permanent solution to flood disaster in the affected areas.
The Ministry boss who stressed the commitment of the present administration to providing conducive environment and peaceful living said government would continue to play its role to make them happy.
He appealed to the people to always complement the efforts of government also and desist from dumping of refuses in drainages and water ways to allow free flow of water to prevent the ugly menace of flooding.
Alhaji Yisau Jamiu, a house owner at Araromi Quarters, opposite Mary Assumpta Hospital, Ado-Ekiti , who expressed his ordeal as a result of the flooding called on the state government to come to the aid of the victims in the area.
Also at Ureje Bridge along Federal Polytechnic Road, Ado-Ekiti which is at the verge of collapsing, one Mr. Peter Ekundayo appealed to the government to construct the bridge before it finally collapse.
