The management of University of Ibadan (UI) has lifted the ban placed on student union activities in the institution.
It will be recalled that the university’s Senate suspended all students’ union activities in the institution following a protest by the students on May 30, 2017. The students had protested against the refusal of the institution to provide them with student identification cards and the management’s alleged indifference to students’ welfare.
Addressing newsmen at the weekend, the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka said the Senate met on Friday and lifted the suspension on students’ union activities.
The Director, Directorate of Public Communications, Tunji Oladejo, also confirmed the development, saying the university is ready to conduct leadership training after the election into the student union government.
“We are ready to work with the crop of new leaders so as to move the university forward,” he said.
It was gathered that the former President for council of faculties, Victor Olaonipekun, has been saddled with the responsibility of conducting a ‘free and fair election’ for the students union within the next nine weeks.
