Engineer Seyi Makinde’s government in Oyo State has said it will soon commence breath test for drivers in the state to ascertain whether they are drunk while driving or not.
This, the state government said, is aimed at reducing the spate of auto accident imduced by drunkeness among drivers.
The Executive Chairman, Oyo State Road Transport Management Authority, Dr Akin Fagbemi, who gave the indication on Saturday, warned drink sellers and club owners in the state against operating near motorparks.
Fagbemi, while warning against drunkenness, said his men recovered a truck with registration number FZE 104 LA from some robbers at the Akinyele area of the state during patrol.
The OYSTROMA chief explained that the three arrested suspects had been handed over to the police for further investigation..
On drunk drivers, he said, “We are here to acquaint members of the public with our activities during the ember months.
“We want to say we are not only enforcing traffic laws. Part of our mandates is to ensure that there is safety of vehicles and safety of humans and the environment.
“We encourage our people to cooperate with us. Governor Seyi Makinde has mandated us to ensure that there is free flow of movement of vehicles and goods and that is what we are doing. Our officers and men are working day and night; you can see them all over.
“I want to use this opportunity again to advise those operating drinking joints to maintain decorum. Those who think they must drink should not drive. If they must drive, they shouldn’t drink. We have impounded more than five vehicles.
“Several accidents are as a result of drunk driving. Drunk drivers constitute harm to themselves as well as other road users. Some street lights and other public infrastructures are being destroyed through road accidents.
“Motorists should know that life is sacred. We want everybody to celebrate the season in peace. We want to acknowledge the support that we are getting from paramilitary organisations.”
