The lawmaker representing Ogbomoso North state constituency in the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, has charged Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration to find ways of reducing the menace of juvenile delinquency among youths and children.
Hon. Oladeji also urged the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Inclusion to urgently embark on sensitization programmes on the negative effect of the menace in the society.
The charge was contained in a motion presented by the lawmaker during the House first plenary of the year, held during the week.
Hon. Oladeji expressed concern over the increase in the rate of juvenile delinquency among out of school children in the state, attributing the development to poor parenting.
In her presentation, she observed that there has been increase in cases of gangsterism and hooliganism, especially among youths between the ages of 16 and 18 years.
Hon. Oladeji, therefore called for the empowerment of juvenile homes with necessary facilities to ensure provision of better services.
She also appealed for the employment of qualified teachers, school librarians, counselors and artisans to train juveniles in skill acquisition and others.
Hon. Oladeji admonished Governor Seyi Makinde to strengthen his government’s policy framework to providing effective support services to correctional homes.
While passing resolution, the Speaker of the House, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, urged the executive arm of government to build more schools and employ more qualified teachers to address the menace.
Hon. Ogundoyin also directed the House Committee on Information to make enquires on the awareness programmes of the executive on juvenile delinquency in the state.
