Oyo Lawmaker, Hon. Oladeji Calls For More Attention For Rape Victims

The lawmaker representing Ogbomoso North state constituency in the Oyo House of Assembly, Hon. (Mrs.) Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji has called on government to pay more attention to checkmate the problem of prevalence of rape in the society.

While presenting the motion on the need to “Checkmate the Prevalence of Rape in Oyo State”, Hon. Oladeji described the rape of minor as a violation of human rights which required a massive mobilization of all and sundry in the society to champion the campaign  against the menace.

The lawmaker urged the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Inclusion to work out an effective specialized service that will focus on the needs of victim-survivors of rape and sexual abuse.

Hon. Oladeji, who is the Chairperson, House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, also called on the Ministry of Health and Hospital Management Board to ensure that victim-survivors are given all inclusive free medical attention, adequate counseling service with a view to rehabilitating them from the traumatic experience.

Seconding the motion, Hon. Seyi Adisa representing Afijio state constituency, called on the government to partner non-governmental organizations specialized in rehabilitating rape victims.

In their submissions, the lawmaker representing Atiba state constituency and Minority Leader, Hon. Asimiyu Alarape and Oyo East/Oyo West state constituency, Isiaka Kehinde called for stiffer penalties for the rape and sexual abuse offenders to serve as deterrent to others who might want to indulge in the act.

The Speaker of the House, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin called for more enlightenment campaigns against rape and admonished victims to speak up for proper legal processes.

Hon. Ogundoyin charged the House Committee on Information to ensure that ministries, departments and agencies embark on enlightenment campaign against the menace of rape, lassa fever, corona virus and others that have potential negative consequences on the people of the state.
