The 7th edition of Awolowo Memorial Cup organised by the National Youth Soccer Association will climax on March 17 at the Campos Mini Stadium, Lagos Island.
The grassroots football competition for U10 boys and U17 girls has aided talent discovery with some the players unearthed in the previous editions now representing the national junior teams.
The ongoing tournament for teams drawn from the South West had 24 male and 16 female football clubs competing in the month-long event, honoring the memory of late Obafemi and Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo.
Addressing sports journalists on this year’s competition, Executive Director, Obafemi Awolowo Foundation, Dr. Olatokunbo Awolowo Dosunmu explained that the ‘catch them young’ initiative represents the aspiration of the late sage and his wife, who in their lifetime encouraged and empowered young people to grow and become great citizens.
She stated further that discovering talent from the grassroots is the best thing that could guarantee a bright future for country, adding that if harnessed properly, the youngsters will bring fame and fortune to the country.
