History was again made on Tuesday when Nigeria’s first Technical University located in Ibadan held a matriculation ceremony for its third set of students.
The event which was held inside the main library of the institution at its Km 11, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo State was attended by dignitaries from all over the country including the mother of the governor of Oyo State, Madam Abigail Makinde and the state’s Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Mrs Funmilayo Orisadeyi.
While addressing the new students, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Ayobami Salami admonished them to concentrate on their studies.
His words “To whom much is given, much is deserved. At Tech-U, we place premium on academic as well as moral excellence. We believe in best practices. So, you too must be prepared to operate along this path.
“Here, there is no room for absenteeism or truancy. Please note that our attendance system is biometric, which no one can beat. If you do not meet residence requirement through class attendance, there is no way you can graduate from here.”
He also informed the new intakes that Tech-U has no room for cultists or ‘Yahoo yahoo boys and girls’ or examination cheats.
“Here at First Tech-U, we cherish knowledge and we will not allow anybody to smear our reputation. You must all key into our noble character and destiny.”
Professor Salami also used the opportunity to showcase students who have been performing excellently well. He said they are known as Tech-U Scholars.
He also informed his audience “the progress we have made has officially put us ahead of many older universities.”
He added “In the 2019 Webtometric Ranking, the Tech-U’s modest effort attracted global attention as it was listed 43rd out of the 252 higher institutions ranked in Nigeria. Indeed, we came atop several first, second and third-generation universities in the country.
“We thank God for these modest achievements. I believe we will still do more with the help of our forward looking governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde.”
Some of the new students who spoke with PMParrot informed that they are happy with the management of the institution adding that they are optimistic of contributing their quotas to the growth of Nigeria.
Said Anjolaoluwa, one of the new students from the Department of Software Engineering “I am happy I am in this school. As you can see, most of our seniors are already entrepreneurs. That is why the VC came up with the concept of Tech-U Entrepreneurs. They have started coming up with inventions and they have spent just two years and a half in this school.”
