Erelu Bisi Fayemi, the Wife of the Ekiti State Governor has called for more unity amongst women towards boosting women emancipation.
Speaking at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado-Ekiti during the celebration of the International Women’s Day in commemoration of the 4th Ekiti Gender summit, Erelu Fayemi charged women to shun backbiting, rumour mongering and others vices that are inimical to women development.
Assuring women that the present administration would continue to make their welfare a priority, Erelu, however, solicited their continued support for government’s efforts at eliminating gender based violence, female genital mutilation, gender inequality and other discriminatory traditional or religious rites that are not in the best interest of women.
She stressed the need for women to be supportive and protective of one another especially those suffering from abuse, battery and domestic violence.
In her remarks, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Chief Mojisola Fafure, explained that the state used the opportunity provided by the International Women’s Day celebration to promote gender equality and protection of women’s fundamental human rights.
Chief Fafure added that the event was also an opportunity to reflect upon the achievements and the important contributions made by women in all endeavors both at local and international levels.
Noting that Governor Fayemi and his wife, Erelu Bisi Fayemi are both gender sensitive and have accorded a high priority to gender equality and women empowerment, Fafure said that the present administration had made tremendous progress through the duo’s laudable programmes designed to uplift women in the state.
She therefore charged women to continue to support the efforts of government at improving their lot and rapidly developing the state.
