Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has disclosed that he considered giving up on football when he ruptured his Achilles in 2018.
The Denzilispor midfielder, who recently returned from a 10-month injury lay-off, missed out on Nigeria’s squad to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
He was also offloaded to Denzilispor from Trabzonspor in January when he dropped down in the pecking order at the club.
“My injury brought me closest to quitting football,” Onazi stated during an Instagram Live chat with @NGSuperEagles.
“When I joined Denzilispor I saw it as an opportunity to express myself. I was coming back from injury at Trabzonspor, who are first in the Turkish Super Lig table and are chasing a Champions League place, so opportunities were limited for me.”
The 26-year-old also revealed that he turned down offers from the Major League Soccer to remain in Turkey.
“I had an offer from the MLS but weighed up the options and decided to remain in Turkey.
Onazi, who has 51 caps, helped Nigeria win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.
