Nigeria have been handed an injury boost ahead of their upcoming 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Benin and Lesotho with first-choice right-back, Kevin Akpoguma set to resume training this week, according to Hoffenheim manager, Sebastian Hoeness.
The former Germany U20 captain, who started the Super Eagles’ last three matches at right-back, has not kicked a ball since suffering a hamstring-related injury in the first half of the 3-1 loss to Freiburg on January 2.
Hoffenheim coach had some good news about Akpoguma when he addressed the media on Wednesday, before his side’s Europa League clash against Molde.
“Robert Skov was back in training for the first time today and is a potential option for Sunday. Kevin Akpoguma might be able to make his return to training at the end of the week,” Hoeness was quoted as saying by Hoffenheim’s official website.
Prior to Akpoguma’s spell on the sidelines, he was a key player for Hoffenheim, starting eleven of their fourteen matches in the Bundesliga and played four matches as a starter in the Europa League.
The 25-year-old made his senior debut for the Super Eagles in a friendly against Algeria last October after 64 appearances for Germany’s youth teams.
