The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) boss in Ekiti state, Dr. Tella Adeniran has warned political parties in the state to desist from campaigning ahead of the 2022 gubernatorial poll in the state as it contravenes the country’s electoral laws.

The Ekiti INEC boss gave the warning at the stakeholders meeting held during the week in Ado Ekiti, while urging the stakeholders to abide by the rules governing the electoral laws in the country.

He said “The Electoral Act 2010, section 9991, as amended frowns at conducting election campaigns ahead of the stipulated time.

“For the purpose of the Act, the period of campaigns in public by any political party shall commence 90 days before the voting day and end 24 hours prior to the day of election”, he concluded.

The INEC Boss further stated that the present available polling units in the state are grossly inadequate to take care of the increasing eligible voters as more people have attained the stipulated voting age since the last gubernatorial election held in the state.

He, however, warned that political parties and INEC officials should resist the urge to locate poling unit near royal palaces, political party buildings, residents of government official, worship centers in order not to compromise the integrity of the election.

Present at the day stakeholders’ meeting included prominent political party leaders in the state, the leadership of the State Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Security agencies among others.
