Incessant Destruction Of Police Stations, INEC Offices: Time For Decisive Actions To Be Taken

Nigerians and their governments at all levels are perhaps the most myopic or probably, incurably optimistic of divine intervention to correct anomalies that ought to be decisively attended to.

The incessant destruction of Police Stations and killing of dutiful officers are being recorded almost on daily basis and nobody seems to be interested in finding out why this is happening.

Recently, gunmen attacked the Umuagu Police Station in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State and razed the facility down.

This came barely two weeks after gunmen burnt down the Ubakala Police station in Umuahia South Area of the state and killed two police officers on duty.

It will not be wrong to assume that these notorious arsonists  are the same set of gunmen that have been terrorizing the people of the South-East geopolitical zone of the country for close to two months running.

As if this is not enough, the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has also come out to practically solicit for help and attention from those in authority because the offices of the electoral organization are also being attacked and destroyed on regular bases.

According to the Chairman of the commission, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, 11 offices, 13 vehicles, 429 electricity generating sets, and others items have been lost to 41 attacks in the past few years.

Yakubu also went ahead to warn that a disruption to the electoral process would undermine Nigeria’s democracy and destabilize the country.

It is instructive to note that most of those who should lift a finger to bail INEC out were at the event where Prof Yakubu was giving his report.

Nigerians definitely deserve more than this because the present democracy being enjoyed was hard-earned especially if one wants to recall the experiences of the post-June 12, 1993 presidential election annulment.

Who will bail out men and officers of the Nigerian Police? Who will come to the assistance of INEC? Who is that person or group of persons that will ensure that the 2023 polls actually hold?

The ominous signs are frightening. It is believed that elders and those who can prevail on President Muhammadu Buhari to re-strategize to stop the rate at which lawlessness is spreading in Nigeria will intensify efforts.

Like we always say here, a stitch in time will save more than nine.

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
