Ex-Super Eagles International players under the forum of the Veterans Football Association recently stormed Ekiti State in a bid to encourage young footballers to show more commitment to the round leather game.
Speaking at the event, the chairperson of the Ekiti Sports Council, Mrs. Olusola Osetoba expressed her delight in playing host to the Ex-Super Eagles players stating that the novelty competition will project the state positively.
She, however, promised to ensure the development of sports in the 16 local government areas of the state and at the grassroots level in order to discover new talents and expose them to limelight.
The first novelty match between the Ondo State All Stars and their counterparts from Ekiti State, ended 2-0 in favour of the Ondo State All Stars.
The second match between Lagos State All Stars and Oyo State All Stars, featured former Eagles players, Victor Agali, Friday Ekpo, Friday Elaho, Godwin Okpara, Taiwo Oloyede and Kayode Emmanuel and other notable ex-international stars, ended with the Oyo State All Stars winning by 2-1.
In the final match, the Ondo State All Stars defeated the Oyo State All Stars 1 – 0.
Speaking further, the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee for the Veterans Football Competition, Mr. Oluworemo Oluwole stated the Veterans football club had existed in the last 25 years in the country and for seven years in Ekiti State.
Oloworemo pointed out that the essence of putting together the football competition was to afford the football Veterans to keep fit and to encourage young footballers and talents to show more interest in the game of football.
He, however, counseled sport loving youths not to be discouraged but rather emulate the veterans and inculcate some of the ideas of those who have succeeded as sportsmen and women.
