Improved Governance: Ogun Lawmakers Parley Council Chairmen, HOLGAs

Local Government Council Chairmen in Ogun State have been tasked to further strengthen mutual interdependence with political functionaries at the State, especially members of the State Assembly for improved service delivery at the grassroot level.

The Speaker of the State Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, gave the charge during an interactive session with the Council Chairmen and Heads of Local Government Administration (HOLGAs) at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Oluomo explained that the robust relationship was essential for the advancement of socio-economic  development of all the local government council areas in the State, such synergy which devoid of political rivalry would assist in strengthening relationship that could improve on their performance and leadership capacity.

He intimated the council chairmen that plans were underway to enact a legislation targeted at establishing and sustaining a common understanding between the chairmen and lawmakers in putting in place policies for a robust utilisation of funds leading to the implementation of laudable projects for the people.

Oluomo added that the nation’s constitution clearly spelt out the roles, relationship and duties of both council helmsmen and state legislators, while challenging the HOLGAs to ensure improved administrative guidance to the political office holders at the grassroot level towards a seamless administration of resources and personnel.

He added that the Assembly was empowered to check the financial records of the council at intervals through its oversight function.

In their respective remarks, the Chairmen of Odeda, Local Government Council, Mrs. Folashade Adeyemo, her Ado-Odo/Ota and Odogbolu counterparts, Sheriff Adewale and Ladejobi Adebayo appreciated the engagement, which was at the instance of the lawmakers, with an assurance of sustaining working relationship with to further improve on the lives of the people in their respective Local Government council areas.

Speaking on behalf of other Heads of Local Government Administration (HOLGAs) Mr. Olusesi Tajudeen stated that the meeting would assist in guiding for both the political functionaries and staffers of the council to function effectively in the discharge of their duties.

Meanwhile,  Speaker Olakunle Oluomo has called on the Assembly’s House Committee on Education, Science and Technology and that of Lands and Housing to link up with the relevant ministries in charge of the ongoing reconstruction of school buildings, especially at Yewa North Local Government  Primary School, Ibeku and Community Primary School, Igbonla in Ijoun to speed up works on the projects to allow the pupils have smooth academic season.

He made the call while responding to the submission of a lawmaker representing Yewa North 2 State constituency, Wahab Haruna, who reported that the contractors handling the construction had stopped works on the projects without completing them while speaking under personal explanation during a plenary at the Assembly Complex Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The Speaker also enjoined the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure to begin massive road reconstruction and rehabilitation where necessary, in all parts of the State immediately the rain subsidies.

Earlier, Hon. Haruna had called on the Speaker to help intervene so that the pupils of the affected schools would enjoy better learning condition as there is no classroom for them currently to continue their academic activities.

He also urged the Assembly to prevail on the State Ministry of Works to help rehabilitate roads in his constituency, which according to him were all impassable, which made him result to using motorcycle as a means of transportation whenever he visited his constituency.
