Disputed Farmland: How Ondo Chief Was Shot Dead, Akeredolu Wades In

Gunmen have shot dead Chief Tunde Ilori Elerewe in Owo town, headquarters of Owo Local Government Area over a disputed farmland.

Chief Elerewe was said to be returning from a meeting where they went to settle a disputed property when he was shot dead.

He and other chiefs were sent by the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Ogunoye, to visit the disputed property.

They were returning to town when the gunmen reportedly shot at them, killing Elerewe and injuring another.

A source said, “They visited the landed property and were returning to town to submit their findings to the palace when the men appeared and shot the man and one other person.

“The hoodlums ran away from the scene immediately and the remains of the man and the other person shot were taken to the hospital where one of them was pronounced dead. I think the incident had been reported to the police in the town.

Witnesses said several youths in Owo town protested the killing of the chief.

It was gathered that major roads into Owo town were blocked with bonfire, causing gridlock.

Police spokesperson, Funmilayo Odunlami, said personnel have been deployed to the area.

She said investigation has commenced into the incident.

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu said killers of Elerewe would be fished out.

The governor spoke through his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who led a delegation of government officials to the palace of Oba Ogunoye on Wednesday night to commiserate with the monarch over the attack.
