Nigeria’s Super Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi says the players and technical crew are aware that they are facing tougher opposition when the knockout round begins in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations but are ready because the trophy is their target.
The 2013 U17 World Cup winner, who was an used substitute in the team final group game against Guinea Bissau said the team will take on each remaining game with the same mentality and confidence they have shown since the tournament started.
“Every point is important for us because we have a lot of confidence. It’s just to take every game step by step.
“Now we are getting into the real tournament proper which we know we have to do everything to get to the next stage again,” the Union Berlin striker said.
Speaking further, the former Liverpool player said the unity in the team will play a big role in achieving their ultimate aim of winning the trophy.
“It’s all about the unity of the country because we are here together to represent one nation so it doesn’t matter who starts, who is playing. The most important thing is to get the three points.
“It’s always nothing but the cup in our mind and hopefully we can deliver it,” he concluded.
Awoniyi netted his first career goal for the senior national team in their 3-1 win against Sudan days ago.
