Chief Segun Oni, the Social Democratic Party’s gubernatorial candidate in Ekiti State has challenged the state’s governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, to deploy his experience as a war study expert to end kidnapping and insecurity in the state before leaving office in October.

Oni, who expressed surprise that kidnapping, killings and ritual murders, had been on the increase and left unchecked in the state, stated, “I am calling on Governor Kayode Fayemi, PhD War Studies, to use his knowledge to tackle kidnapping in the state.”

The former governor, who spoke on Wednesday during SDP familiarisation visit to party members in Oye, Ikole, Ekiti East, Efon, Ijero, Ekiti West and Gbonyi Council Areas of the state, added, “Kidnappers have declared war on our people. This has been going on since about four years ago and has not ceased. As an engineer, I will fix any engineering challenges facing the state.

“Fayemi should not only chase them away, but arrest them and bring them to book. He should do that before October 16, 2022, when he will be leaving office, to justify the mandate the people gave him four years ago.

But the state Publicity Secretary for the APC, Segun Dipe, who disagreed with Oni on the security situation in the state, said Ekiti State recorded the least cases of kidnapping just as Fayemi was doing a lot to ensure lives and property were safe in the state.

Dipe stated, “As the governor of Ekiti State, Fayemi is doing his best and security operatives are doing their best. If you look at the trend of kidnapping in the state, you will see that in the last one or two years, those who kidnapped have always been arrested.

“Check the record and you will see that the state has no hiding place for criminals. The security measure here is strong and commendable. Ekiti State is the least affected in the South-West region.”

“Most of these things are always happening at the border towns, the moment they kidnap, they don’t stay in the state. They run away because there is no hiding place for them in the state. Most of the kidnappers are always nabbed and prosecuted.”

“The solution is not far-fetched. I can assure you that Governor Fayemi is not taking it lightly with anybody suspected to have a hand in criminal activities.”
