Ekiti Guber:NGOs Task Politicians, Citizens On Need To Shun Violence

Non-governmental organizations (NGO) in Ekiti State, the New Generation Girls and Women Development Initiative (NIGAWD) and Balm in Gilead Foundation for Sustainable Development (BIGIF) have urged politicians and voters to shun electoral violence and embrace peace ahead of the state gubernatorial election.

The organizations revealed this in Ado Ekiti on Thursday during a one-day conference targeted at educating voters and stakeholders on the need to vote wisely and shun voters apathy during the election.

Speaking, the Executive Director for NIGAWD, Mrs. Abimbola Aladejare Salako expressed satisfaction on the success of the programme while assuring that the campaigns and other developmental initiatives have continued to enjoy immeasurable support from different stakeholders across the state.

She said, “The time for Ekiti State to elect the next Governor will present itself on June 18, 2022. The conduct of youths and stakeholders in the election will not only inform the world’s opinions about us, it will also set the trend for the Osun State gubernatorial election and the 2023 general elections.

She continued: “We urge all stakeholders to synergize and consolidate on efforts aimed at promoting peaceful election and constructive participation of young persons in the electoral process which will lead to a violence free, fair and credible election”.

Speaking further, the Programme Director of National Democratic Institute (NDI) Ben stated that the organization’s duties include promoting the political and socio-economic rights of women and youths in the country, revealing that the awareness campaign is through the collaboration of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
