A few weeks after quitting the Bundesliga club Union Berlin to join Nottingham Forest on a club-record fee, Taiwo Awoniyi will make a return to the German club in a pre-season friendly match.
According to the pre-season itinerary released yesterday by Nottingham Forest, the Nigerian international will lead the attack for the Reds when he returns to Union Berlin where his career flourished in the German Bundesliga on July 23.
Awoniyi becomes Forest’s first international signing since their promotion to the Premier League with an excellent season in Germany, scoring 20 goals in 43 games across all competitions.
His 15 goals in 31 Bundesliga matches also helped Union Berlin secure a fifth-place finish and qualification for the UEFA Europa League for the first time since 2001-02.
Awoniyi and his teammates Nottingham Forest will commence their pre-season by travelling to Alicante, Spain for a training camp and the camp will be concluded with a match against Coventry City at the Pinatar Arena in San Pedro del Pinatar on Friday, July 8.
Upon return to Nottingham, Forest will play Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium on Tuesday, July 12, before travelling to Oakwell to face Barnsley on Saturday, July 16.
In readiness for their opening home Premier League game on Saturday, August 13, Nottingham Forest will play Bundesliga team Hertha Berlin at Burton’s Pirelli Stadium on Wednesday, July 20 and three days later will be the homecoming for Awoniyi when he leads Nottingham Forest against his former club Union Berlin at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei on Saturday, July 23.
