Everton are reportedly close to signing Alex Iwobi to a new long-term contract following an incredible campaign for the Nigerian international.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the midfielder is expected to sign new terms with the Toffees after a string of impressive performances for Frank Lampard’s side this season, with Iwobi scoring one and assisting five in the Premier League already.
Signed from Arsenal for a reported £35m in 2019, Iwobi is starting to look the part for Everton having struggled over the years at Goodison Park. However, Lampard’s coaching has finally seen the 26-year-old nail down a role that gets the best out of the Nigerian’s qualities.
Lauded as ‘brilliant’ by Lampard himself, Iwobi’s transformation has been nothing short of incredible, with the midfielder one of the few bright sparks for the Toffees in what has been another year to forget for the Merseyside outfit.
Indeed, Everton sit 17th heading into the Premier League restart, and whilst Iwobi’s performances have been incredible, the Goodison Park side will have to do more in the January window to support the midfielder if the Toffees are to get out this latest rut in 2023.
Everton’s moves both on and off the pitch have been questionable in recent years, though there’s no denying that signing Iwobi to a new contract is a great step in the right direction for Lampard and company, who have transformed a once lost-cause into a Premier League machine.
After all, Iwobi has realistically been one of the best-performing midfielders in England this season, and Everton signing the former Arsenal star to new terms is exactly what fans wanted to see over the 2022 FIFA World Cup break.
