Additional Standing Committees To Be Created By Senate

All things being equal, the Nigerian Senate will, anytime from now increase the number of its Standing Committees.

This was disclosed by the Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, who at plenary after the conclusion of the days ministerial screening raised a point of order on the need to amend the Standing Orders of the Senate.

The amendment sought to enable the Senate expand the number of its Standing Committees.

According to Bamidele, the amendment of the Rules is to accommodate issues which will make the Orders dynamic to facilitate effective Legislative process.

He said despite the amendment of the rules in 2022, there are a number of issues that still required further amendments in response to emerging developments that wil enhance rules and procedures for legislative practice.

In addition, he said the amendment would ensure that the expansion would facilitate the definition of the functions and jurisdictions of new Committees.

“As result,” he said “the consequential approval of the Senate is mandatory for the the review of the renumbered Order 96 to accommodate the new Committees.”

In his prayers, the Senate Leader urged the Senator to approve the proposed amendments.

The Senate later went into an executive session to consider the modalities for the amendment.
