Immediate past Super Eagles foreign trainer, Gernot Rohr, said it was regrettable that German champions, Bayern Munich settled for England captain Harry Kane instead of signing Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen.
Nigeria international striker Osimhen was linked to several top European clubs including Bayern Munich, PSG and Manchester United all through the Summer Transfer Window but Napoli’s seeming outrageous demand put off many suitors including Bavarians who eventually paid a record Bundesliga fee of £104million to acquire the services of Kane from Tottenham Hotspurs on Friday.
But Rohr, the erstwhile Bayern Munich defender, reckoned that Osimhen would have been a better buy for his former club for obvious reasons.
“I would have preferred (that Bayern Munich) buy our younger player Osimhen (24-year-old) who was the youngest player with me during my first match for the Super Eagles against Tanzania in 2016,” Rohr told NationSport from France yesterday.
Speaking further, the 70-year-old Rohr was bemused that Kane had a quiet debut for the Bundesliga champions as they were outfought by RB Leipzig in the DFB Supercup in an emphatic 3-0 win on Saturday, while Spain international Dani Olmo took the headline with a hat-trick.
“It’s a pity they (Bayern) spent so much money on Kane who is already 30 and we say him yesterday (Saturday) and he was only able to touch the ball for just three times in 30 minutes in his first game (for Bayern),” Rohr further said. “Of course, the team is not too good actually and it’s going to be a difficult season for Bayern.
“But I regret that they didn’t sign Osimhen, of course,” he added.
Napoli and Osimhen
Meanwhile, Italian news outlet Il Mattino claimed that Osimhen is only a step away from renewing his Napoli contract after agreeing terms with Aurelio De Laurentiis.
As reported by Il Mattino via TMW, after a lengthy round of negotiations, Osimhen has agreed to sign a new long-term contract with Napoli, worth up to €12m net per season including add-ons and other variables.
Two release clauses will also be included, one for clubs outside of Italy and the other for clubs in the Saudi Pro League, which will be set at €150m.
Osimhen is now ready to put pen to paper on his new contract, extending his stay at Napoli until June 2027.
