Makinde Warns Illegal Miners As He Gives Out Staff Of Office To Asigangan

The Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde has reiterated his commitment to deal with any traditional ruler found aiding the activities of illegal miners in the state.

The governor sounded the note of warning at the official Coronation and presentation of Staff of Office to the new Asigangan of Igangan, His Royal Majesty, Oba Rafiu Olaniyi Adeniyi, (Ariwoola Aako II) held at Federal Government College, Igangan on Monday.

Speaking on behalf of the governor, Deputy Governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal, explained that the traditional rulers in the state should be conversant with activities of illegal miners in their domain.

He noted that other forms of criminal activities such as banditry, kidnapping among others thrive at any environment where there’s illegal mining activity.

Governor Makinde assured that the state government will not relent in the fight against insecurity to protect lives and properties of the people in Ibarapa and Oyo State at large.

While presenting the Staff and Instrument of Office to the new Asigangan of Igangan, the governor said that the monarch had passed through the three stages established by the Chiefs’ Laws of Oyo State in the installation of new king without rancour.

He listed the stages established by the Chiefs Laws to include nomination of candidate by the royal family, investigation and adoption by the kingmakers and confirmation of the candidate by the state governor.

Governor Seyi Makinde reiterated that every other town awaiting the installation of new king must follow due process and guidelines established by the laws.

While calling on the indigenes and residents of Igangan to rally round the new king, he, as well, appealed to the monarch to support the present administration in the state to fulfill its promises to provide all round development across the zones in the state.

The new Asigangan of Igangan, Oba Rafiu Olaniyi Adeniyi expressed his appreciation to the state government, saying that the coronation has added to the history of Igangan.

Revealing his ambition to the government and people of Igangan, Oba Adeniyi promised to ensure collaborative efforts between the indigenes and adjourning communities especially in the area of security.

The monarch also appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde for the completion of abandoned Igangan 60-bed hospital approved in 1976, restoration of electricity which has been cut-off for over five years and building of a befitting palace for the Asigangan of Igangan.

In his welcome address, the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matter, Segun Olayiwola,  expressed the commitment of the state towards upholding the value of respect, harmony and progress that have defined Igangan.

He enjoined the royal father to join the government in the fight against illegal miners and land grabbers.
