APC Chieftain To Tinubu: Stop Osun LG Poll To Avert Crisis

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Osun State, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and stop Governor Ademola Adeleke from proceeding with the local government election scheduled for Saturday.

Speaking with journalists in Osogbo, the state capital, on Thursday, Oyintiloye warned that holding the election could trigger violence in the state.

The state government had vowed to go ahead with the council poll despite the political crisis that has engulfed the state as a result of the taking over of LG secretariats by chairmen elected on the platform of the APC.

But the APC chieftain argued that since there was no leadership vacuum in the local councils following the Court of Appeal’s reinstatement of APC chairmen and councilors, conducting the poll would amount to an aberration.

The APC stalwart expressed concerns over the recent violence in the state, noting that six lives were lost across various council areas on Monday, with several others injured.

“The state government must not endanger the lives of residents in the name of politics. It should instead seek redress at the Supreme Court if it is dissatisfied with the Court of Appeal’s judgment,” Oyintiloye stated.

He also commended security agencies for their swift intervention in restoring peace but maintained that the proposed election could heighten tensions.

“I appeal to President Tinubu to prevail on Governor Adeleke to suspend the election in the interest of security.

“All we want in Osun is peace, and anything that threatens the state’s stability must be avoided,” he said.

Oyintiloye further urged Adeleke to respect the rule of law, reminding him that it was the judicial process that brought him into office.

“The primary duty of any government is the protection of lives and property. Governor Adeleke must not allow anything that could lead to bloodshed,” he added.

While condoling with families of the victims of the recent violence, Oyintiloye reassured that APC members in the state would remain law-abiding and continue to support constitutional measures to safeguard the lives and property of Osun residents.
