A cult clash between rival cult groups in the Owode Ajegunle area of Lagos State has left one person dead.
It was learnt that the incident happened on Monday.
It was gathered one of the rival cult groups was on a mission to avenge the death of one of them when they ran into another group.
A source in the community told our correspondent on Thursday that this resulted in a confrontation leading to the death of the deceased identified simply as Sparkle.
The source said, “The Buccaneer cult group was out to avenge the death of their colleague when they met the Aiye cult group to which Sparkle belongs.
“They insulted each other and this degenerated into a heated confrontation. It was during this that Sparkle was shot dead and he died on the spot.”
Another source in the community said trouble started when a Buccaneer cultist was ambushed and shot by Eiye cultists while walking with his girlfriend.
The victim was rushed to the hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival by doctor on duty.
“A buccaneer was killed in the community about a week earlier. He was taking a walk with his girlfriend when he was approached and shot at close range. Although he was rushed to the hospital, the doctors on duty confirmed him dead on arrival. This was why the Buccaneers went out to avenge his death before they came across the Aiye group which resulted in the death of Sparkle.
“The Buccaneers are now reportedly planning to attack the Eiye cult group to avenge their fallen member, while the Aye cult group is also planning retaliation against Buccaneer to avenge Sparkle’s death. Some community members are living in fear due to the incident,” the source added.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said he was not aware of the incident.
“I am not aware of the incident,” he disclosed.
